It’s the paperback release day for Too Close to Breathe by Olivia Kiernan and I’m delighted to be re-posting my review today! First of all let’s take a look at the description for the book…
ABOUT THE BOOK
TOO SOON TO SEE
Polished. Professional. Perfect. Dead. Respected scientist Dr Eleanor Costello is found hanged in her immaculate home: the scene the very picture of a suicide.
TOO LATE TO HIDE
DCS Frankie Sheehan is handed the case, and almost immediately spots foul play. Sheehan, a trained profiler, is seeking a murderer with a talent for death.
TOO CLOSE TO BREATHE
As Frankie strives to paint a picture of the killer, and their victim, she starts to sense they are part of a larger, darker canvas, on which the lines between the two blur.
Olivia Kiernan’s debut is a bold, brilliant thriller that will keep you guessing and leave you breathless.
It’s always a fine balance trying to introduce a character and also hitting the ground running with a story and I think overall Olivia Kiernan manages this. I have to admit that there is a slower pace to begin with but to be honest I felt like I got to know Frankie pretty well this way. Along with making me curious as to her past and what happened to her as bits and pieces are slowly revealed. Frankie is very intriguing much like the case in Too Close to Breathe and I especially liked her thought process. Together with Baz they make a great team although she has her flaws especially in her put downs to the people around her. However her pure determination to find the killer made me appreciate her character flaws and all.
Olivia Kiernan has a descriptive writing style that sets the scene and definitely helped to pull me into the story. It has a complex twisty plot with a fair few suspects which helped to keep my interest along with being invested in discovering the truth. The Dark Web aspect was very interesting as I hadn’t read many books with it featuring in the storyline. I have seen the odd detective/police TV show where the subject is mentioned but that is about my knowledge of the subject. So it was great to see this in the story as I wondered how events would play out and how it would all tie in.
A brilliant debut and I for one can’t wait to see what will happen next in the series. Too Close to Breathe has a tense and dark story that had the power to keep me guessing throughout!
