I’m thrilled to be taking part in the blog tour for The Whisper Man by Alex North and sharing my review today! With thanks to Michael Joseph for the invite to join the tour and for my lovely copy. First things first let’s take a look at the description for the book…
ABOUT THE BOOK
In this dark, suspenseful thriller, Alex North weaves a multi-generational tale of a father and son caught in the crosshairs of an investigation to catch a serial killer preying on a small town.
After the sudden death of his wife, Tom Kennedy believes a fresh start will help him and his young son Jake heal. A new beginning, a new house, a new town. Featherbank.
But the town has a dark past. Twenty years ago, a serial killer abducted and murdered five residents. Until Frank Carter was finally caught, he was nicknamed “The Whisper Man,” for he would lure his victims out by whispering at their windows at night.
Just as Tom and Jake settle into their new home, a young boy vanishes. His disappearance bears an unnerving resemblance to Frank Carter’s crimes, reigniting old rumors that he preyed with an accomplice. Now, detectives Amanda Beck and Pete Willis must find the boy before it is too late, even if that means Pete has to revisit his great foe in prison: The Whisper Man.
And then Jake begins acting strangely. He hears a whispering at his window…
So I will admit that I sat here for a while wondering how to write this review, the only things that seemed to pop into my head was wow, amazing and loved this book! Well I guess that shows you how much I enjoyed it but not much else! Right, well here goes…
The Whisper Man just had that something special that made me instantly connect with both the story and the characters. I loved hearing the story told from different perspectives as it all came together to give the book an extra depth. When we are introduced to Tom and his son you really get a feel for their grief it felt intense and believable making me hope that this fresh start would work out for them. However their new start isn’t perfect with the whisper man creating a very ominous cloud over Featherbank.
There was a brilliant mix of themes within the story along with an eerie edge that made it so addictive. There were a few “woah” moments where I had to re-read certain parts because they were such great twists! I loved all of the shocks and surprises that were just waiting for me to discover along with a creeping tension that just bubbles away under the surface. I always say this but I do love short and snappy chapters and in The Whisper Man they work so well and if possible they made the story move at an even faster pace. Talking of pacing Alex North timed every dark tense moment and twist perfectly to keep me on my toes and fully invested in seeing how it would all turn out in the end. This book is dark, twisty and tension filled let’s just say I couldn’t read it fast enough, I wish I could have devoured this book in one go because that’s how easily this story grabbed hold.
Alex North has created such a cleverly crafted story one that with every page just got better and better! There was also an emotional side that I have to say blindsided me, I admit there were tears and I think this just goes to show how involved I became in the story! The way everything came together was just amazing. I guess all that’s left to say is that The Whisper Man well and truly had me hooked! Loved it!
