Deep Dark Night by Steph Broadribb @crimethrillgirl @OrendaBooks #20BooksofSummer (2/20) #Review

Thanks for stopping by! I’m thrilled to be sharing my review for Deep Dark Night by Steph Broadribb. This is my second book for the 20 books of summer challenge and is my own copy. First things first before we get to my review let’s take a look at the description for the book…

ABOUT THE BOOK

A city in darkness. A building in lockdown. A score that can only be settled in blood…

Working off the books for FBI Special Agent Alex Monroe, Florida bounty-hunter Lori Anderson and her partner, JT, head to Chicago. Their mission: to entrap the head of the Cabressa crime family. The bait: a priceless chess set that Cabressa is determined to add to his collection.

An exclusive high-stakes poker game is arranged in the penthouse suite of one of the city’s tallest buildings, with Lori holding the cards in an agreed arrangement to hand over the pieces, one by one. But, as night falls and the game plays out, stakes rise and tempers flare.

When a power failure plunges the city into darkness, the building goes into lockdown. But this isn’t an ordinary blackout, and the men around the poker table aren’t all who they say they are. Hostages are taken, old scores resurface and the players start to die.

And that’s just the beginning…

MY REVIEW

I have to start my review by saying first of all that I love this series. With its strong characters, fun and action packed storylines. It is a series where I always look forward to a new release. Plus it’s always great to catch up with Lori again! Let’s just say that the opening to Deep Dark Night instantly grabbed my attention and also left me with a few questions. I couldn’t wait to see how this prologue would tie in with the rest of the story.

Deep Dark Night is set in Chicago and we meet up with Lori at the ‘Bean’ sculpture. Steph Broadribb always sets the scene making me feel like I’m right there with her characters but this part of the book also brought back memories of my visit to Chicago a few years back. Well more than a few years but who’s counting. So I guess in a way this part especially felt even more realistic for me. Just like every book in this series be prepared to feel the need to consume this book in one sitting. That’s how addictive it is! Deep Dark Night picked me up and whisked me away so fast that my feet hardly touched the ground! Lori finds herself in the middle of yet another dangerous situation and I couldn’t turn those pages fast enough to find out if she would make it through to the other side.

It’s safe to say that the characters at this point in the series feel just like friends. Which let’s be honest definitely ups the tension levels! You want them to succeed but Steph Broadribb throws in some inventive twists and turns that made everything even more exciting. I also have to talk about Lori and JT because they really do have a brilliant connection. They aren’t perfect by any means. Both of them have flaws but the thing is they have this amazing spark that just shines out from the pages. I have to admit I loved how that side of things was explored just that little bit more in this book.

What can I say to end my review other than to highly recommend not just this book but the entire series. Deep Dark Night is both addictive and compelling. You’ve been warned. Prepare yourself for a bumpy rollercoaster ride!
