Thanks for stopping by! I’m delighted to be one of the bloggers taking part in the blog tour for The Crazy Season by Jim Ody and sharing my review today. With thanks to Zoé at Zooloo’s Book Tours for the invite to join the tour and to the author for my copy of the book. First things first let’s take a look at the description for the book…
Joel Baxter is infamous for solving weird and bizarre cases that others avoid. So, when he receives an email from a teenage boy Tim saying his town is cursed, he cannot turn it down.
“…I will more than likely be dead when you read this. There is nothing I can do about it. It’s the curse, and we’ve hit The Crazy Season.” Every 20 years, there are a handful of unexplained teenage deaths and it’s started again.
With the help of his straight-talking friend Melody, they set out to get to the bottom of the alleged curse. Everybody in Black Rock has secrets and nobody wants to speak.
The closer they get to truth the more Joel and Melody realise that their involvement is far from coincidental.
The Crazy Season definitely took me on a crazy journey. One where I wasn’t quite sure where I was being taken. There were twisty moments dotted throughout and I loved trying to figure it all out. Black Rock as a setting definitely helped to add an eerie edge to the story. On the surface everything looked rosy but dig a little deeper and things weren’t quite as they seemed. Then add in the alleged curse and things got very interesting!
One of the highlights for me has to be the characters, Joel and Melody. Joel is very likeable with a determination that really shines through. Melody at first appears to be completely carefree however as the story progressed you began to see more layers to her personality revealed. Separately they were great characters but together I thought they worked perfectly. Both Joel and Melody made me smile with their interactions. Especially Melody and the fact she has no filter, which I loved! This all combined with some of the more tense moments to create a great balance.
The Crazy Season had a strong mystery that kept me intrigued right the way through until everything was finally revealed. The plot itself moved at a good pace especially as I got to know the strong characters. I couldn’t help but care about them, feeling as if I had made new friends. The Crazy Season had a mysterious edge and a tense undercurrent. It was a brilliant start to a new series and I’m already eager to read book two!
